'This First One Still The Best In The Trilogy' by ccthemovieman-124 December 2006
This movie put director Robert Rodriguez "on the map." He followed up with two sequels: "Desperado" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico." Not surprisingly, the best of the three was this low-budget opening film. As Rodriquez had more and more money to spend on the sequels, the stories got more and more carried away with too many explosions and special effects, losing the charm of this first effort. The movie has interesting camera closeups and angles as Rodriquez shows that he was going to be a stylish director. The story is simple but effective, suspenseful, and even with some humor. Unlike his subsequent films in this trilogy, the action is not overdone here. The length is also a plus. At 80 minutes you can be thoroughly entertained in less than an hour-and-a-half. The only disappointment was the print quality. There might be better editions out since. It's not fuzzy but it's not sharp, either.
Anyway, I highly recommend it to action/crime buffs who like style in their photography, or saw the sequels and would like to know the history of this particular "Mariachi."

——🎬Plot:——
Former musician and gunslinger El Mariachi arrives at a small Mexican border town after being away for a long time. His past quickly catches up with him and he soon gets entangled with the local drug kingpin Bucho and his gang.
With this sequel to his prize-winning independent previous film, "El Mariachi," director Robert Rodriquez joins the ranks of Sam Peckinpah and John Woo as a master of slick, glamorized ultra-violence. We pick up the story as a continuation of "El Mariachi," where an itinerant musician, looking for work, gets mistaken for a hitman and thereby entangled in a web of love, corruption, and death. This time, he is out to avenge the murder of his lover and the maiming of his fretting hand, which occurred at the end of the earlier movie. However, the plot is recapitulated, and again, a case of mistaken identity leads to a very high body count, involvement with a beautiful woman who works for the local drug lord, and finally, the inevitable face-to-face confrontation and bloody showdown
