Edit 2 for headphones, June 2024. Bobby Darin wrote this song for Tim Hardin, a 'repay', as Hardin had written Darin's big hit "If I were a carpenter". Recorded in 1969 James Timothy Hardin had a #19 hit with it in hurray for Holland and a #50 hit in the US. Bobby Darin died at the age of 37 after a heart surgery, Tim Hardin died of a heroin overdose at the age of 39. Don't use drugs, the minute you you start to do so a switch in your brains is turned in a bad way. Be warned.

Source of the edit is the version on the 1996 album "simple songs of freedom (the tim hardin collection)".

SIMPLE SONG OF FREEDOM
(Bobby Darin, born Walden Robert Cassotto)

come and sing a simple song of freedom
sing it like you've never sung before
let it fill the air
tell the people everywhere
we the people here don't want a war

hey there Mister Black Man can you hear me
I don't want your diamonds or your game
I just want to be someone known to you as me
and I will bet my life you want the same

come and sing a simple song of freedom
sing it like you've never sung before
let it fill the air
tell the people everywhere
we the people here don't want a war

seven hundred million are you listening
most of what you read most of what your read is made of lies
speaking one to one ain't it everybody's sun
to wake to in the morning when we rise

come and sing a simple song of freedom
sing it like you've never never sung before
let it fill the air
tell the people everywhere
we the people here don't want a war

no doubt some folks enjoy doing battle
like presidents prime ministers and kings
so let us build them shelves
so they might fight among themselves
and leave us be those who want to sing

come and sing a simple song of freedom
sing it like you've never never sung before
let it fill the air
tell the people everywhere
we the people here don't want a war

(come and sing a simple song of freedom
sing it like you've never never sung before)

speaking one to one
ain't it everybody everybody's song
to wake to in the morning when we rise when we rise
speaking one to one
ain't it everybody everybody's song
to wake to in the morning when we rise when we rise rise

Edit for headphones, June 2024. A song from their 1986 album "Steppenwolf", their first album.
Steppenwolf was a Canadian-American rock band that was prominent from 1968 to 1972. The group was formed in late 1967 in Los Angeles by lead singer John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn and drummer Jerry Edmonton, all formerly of the Canadian band "The Sparrows". Guitarist Michael Monarch and bass guitarist Rushton Moreve were recruited via notices placed in Los Angeles-area record and musical instrument stores.

Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide, released seven gold albums and one platinum album and had 13 Billboard Hot 100 singles, of which seven were Top 40 hits, including three top 10 successes: "Born to Be Wild", "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Rock Me". Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup. From 1980 to 2018 John Kay was the only original member involved, having been the lead singer since 1967. The band was called "John Kay & Steppenwolf" from 1980 to 2018. In Canada they had four top 10 songs, 12 top 40 and 14 in the top 100.

DESPERATION
(John Kay)

when rain drops fall and you feel low
ah do you ever think it's useless
do feel like letting go
do you ever sit and do you wonder
will the world ever change
and just how long will it take
to have it all rearranged

tell me why these things are still the same
tell me why no one can seem to learn from mistakes

take my hand if you don't know where you're goin'
I'll understand I've lost the way myself
oh don't take that old road mmm it leads to nowhere
we must return before the clock strikes twelve

it's so easy to do nothin'
when you're busy night and day
take a step in one direction
ohh and take a step the other way

so don't quit tryin' when you stumble
don't give up should you fall
keep on searchin' for the passway
that lead you through the wall

don't look back or you'll be left behind
don't look back or you will never find peace of mind

take my hand if you don't know where you're goin'
I'll understand I've lost the way myself
oh don't take that old road it leads to nowhere
we must return before the clock strikes twelve

take my hand if you don't know where you're goin'
I'll understand I've lost the way myself
don't take that old road oh it leads to nowhere
we must return before the clock strikes

Edit 2 for headphones, June 2024. D u b b e d  video. The only decent version of this song - so with the least bass distortion - that I could find is on "No Stone Unturned + 7 bonus tracks" (CD-Maximum – CDM 1202-106328). I tried to process it, but it is a difficult one to handle because of the bad recording quality. Hope you still like it.
Recorded on November 15, 1963, and released in the UK on the EP "The Rolling Stones" in January of 1964. Released in the US in 1972 on "More Hot Rocks". Yes, that was eight years later.

Harmonica: Brian Jones. Backing vocals: Brian Jones, Keith Richards and Bill Wyman. Lead vocals: Mick Jagger. Electric guitar: Keith Richards. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts.

"Money (That's What I Want)" was a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong for the Tamla label, distributed nationally on Anna Records. The song was written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, and became the first hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise.

MONEY
(Berry Gordy/Janie Bradford)

the best things in life are free
look I'll give 'em to the birds and bees
I want money (that's what I want)
yeah, that's what I want (oh yeah, that's what I want)
that's what I want, oh yeah (that's what I want)
that's what I want (oh yeah, that's what I want)

money don't buy everything it's true
what it don't buy I can't use
I want money (that's what I want)
oh come on baby (oh yeah, that's what I want)
that's what I want, whoa oh (that's what I want)
that's what I want (oh yeah, that's what I want)

yeah, yeah, yeah

you love give me such a thrill
but you love won't pay my bills
I want money (that's what I want)
yeah (oh yeah, that's what I want)
that's what I want, o yeah (that's what I want)
that's what I want (oh yeah, that's what I want)

yeah give me money, yeah, yeah, yeah (that's what I want)
lots of money, yeah, yeah, yeah (oh yeah, that's what I
want)
if you want me to love you (that's what I want)
give me money (oh yeah, that's what I want)
if you want me to squeeze you (that's what I want)
give me money (oh yeah, that's what I want)
that's what I want, oh yeah (that's what I want)
that's what I want (oh yeah, that's what I want)

give me money
come on baby
lots of money
yeah now
if you want me to love you
give me money
if you want me to hold you

that's what I want
come on baby
give me what I want

Edit 1b (live) for headphones, January 2022/June 2024. A live performance on German tv, quite different from the official single release. In 1968 the song charted #3 in Switzerland, #5 in Holland and Belgium, #7 in France, #8 in the UK and Canada, #9 in Australia, #13 in Germany, #14 in Ireland, and hey, this one had music & charts too: #16 in the USA...
On the singles, Floyd Jones and Alan Wilson are listed as the composers, while the album credits Jim Oden/James Burke Oden (also known as St. Louis Jimmy Oden). Alan Wilson used verses from Floyd Jones' "On the Road Again" and "Dark Road" and added some lines of his own.
Alan Wilson – vocals, harmonica, electric guitar, tambura.
Henry Vestine – electric guitar.
Larry Taylor – bass guitar.
Adolfo de la Parra – drums.

ON THE ROAD AGAIAN
(Floyd Jones/Alan Wilson)

well I'm so tired of crying
but I'm out on the road again
I'm on the road again

well I'm so tired of crying
but I'm out on the road again
I'm on the road again

I ain't got no woman
just to call my special friend

you know the first time I traveled out
in the rain and snow
in the rain and snow

you know the first time I traveled out
in the rain and snow
in the rain and snow

I didn't have no payroll
not even no place to go

and my dear mother left me when
I was quite young
when I was quite young

and my dear mother left me when
I was quite young
when I was quite young

she said Lord have mercy
on my wicked son

take a hint from me mama please
don't you cry no more
don't you cry no more

take a hint from me mama please
don't you cry no more
don't you cry no more

'cause it's soon one morning
down the road I'm going

but I ain't going down that
long old lonesome road
all by myself

but I ain't going down that
long old lonesome road
all by myself

I can't carry you baby
gonna carry somebody else

Lead electric guitar: Brian Jones. Piano: Ian Stewart. Lead vocals: Mick Jagger. Rhythm electric guitar & background vocals: Keith Richards. Bass & fuzz bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts.

505 was the flight number on the Rolling Stones' first trip to America.

FLIGHT 505
(Jagger/Richards)

well I was happy here at home
I got everything I need
happy being on my own
just living the life I lead
well suddenly it dawned on me
that this was not my life
so I just phoned the airline girl
and said get me on flight number five o five
get me on flight number 505

well I confirmed my reservation
then I hopped a cab
no idea of my destination
and feeling pretty bad
with my suitcase in my hand
in my head my new life
so then I told the airline girl
well, get me on flight number 505
get me on flight number 505
alright

well I sat right there in my seat
well feeling like a king
with the whole world right at my feet
of course I'll have a drink
well suddenly I saw
that we never ever would arrive
he put the plane down in the sea
the end of flight number 505
the end of flight number 505
alright

they put the plane down in the sea
the end of flight number 505
the end of flight number five o five

Edit 1c for headphones, June 2012/May 2024. "Play with fire" was recorded January 11-18, 1965. Released as B side single to "The last time", February 26, 1965 (UK), March 13, 1965 (US). Released on the US version of "Out Of Our Heads" July 30, 1965. Also on the US version of the compilation album "Big Hits (Hight Tide And Green Grass)", April 2, 1966. The stereo version was released January 1972 on the US compilation album "Hot Rocks 1964-1971". Only until 1981 it was released on album in the UK, on the Decca album "Slow Rollers", in mono.
That took almost sixteen years...
In 1986 "Hot Rocks" was released in the UK, fourteen years after the US release.
In August 1989 released on "The Rolling Stones Singles Collection: The London Years". March 25, 1991 a live version was B-side to "Highwire". May 24, 1991 a (previously unreleased) live version was on the maxi-single "Ruby Tuesday" (this is the stunning Ruby Tuesday version from the April 8, 1991 album "Flaspoint" that got the audience out of their heads). The live "Play With Fire" also was released (twice) on the 45 singles cd box set "The Singles (1971-2006)" on April 26, 2011. November 6, 2012 another live version was released on "Charlie Is My Darling - Ireland 1965" (dvd/blue ray documentary) and "Live In England '65" (live album). November 9 & 12, 2012 it was released (mono) on the superdeluxe edition of "Grrr!". Yeah, let's all get backward, to mono. Next Stones film idea by me: a black & white one without band music, but with a piano player & a guy telling the story.

With a many thanks for the info to the makers of the great site www.timeisonourside.com

Lead vocals & tambourine: Mick Jagger. Acoustic guitar: Keith Richards. Electric guitar & harpsichord: Jack Nitzsche. Bass: Phil Spector.

PLAY WITH FIRE
(Nanker Phelge)

well you've got your diamonds
and you've got your pretty clothes
and the chauffeur drives your car
you let everybody know
but don't play with me
'cause you're playing with fire

your mother she's an heiress
owns a block in saint John's wood
and your father'd be there with her
if he only could
but don't play with me
'cause you're playing with fire

your old man took her diamond's
and tiaras by the score
now she gets her kicks in Stepney
not in Knightsbridge anymore
so don't play with me
'cause you're playing with fire

now you've got some diamonds
and you will have some others
but you'd better watch your step girl
or start living with your mother
so don't play with me
'cause you're playing with fire
so don't play with me
'cause you're playing with fire

Edit 2c (no logo - color) for headphones, October 2015/December 2023. Great full scale live performance! With three guitarists, a bass player, four brass players, a drummer & a keyboardist the Bee Gees really made sure it sounded great! My favorite Rolling Stones song in an Australian package of English origin...

Edit for headphones, May 2024. Live on the French talk show "Passez Donc Me Voir" on December 31st, 1979.
"The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" is a song by American poet and songwriter Shel Silverstein. Released on Marianne Faithfull's 1979 album "Broken English". Released as a single in November 1979 it reached #2 in Austria, #4 in South Africa, #5 in Switzerland and Germany, #7 in Belgium, #17 in France, #18 in Australia, #20 in New Zealand and #48 in the UK.

THE BALLAD OF LUCY JORDAN *
(Shel Silverstein)

the morning sun touched lightly on
the eyes of Lucy Jordan
in a white suburban bedroom
in a white suburban town

and she lay there neath the covers
dreaming of a thousand lovers
til the world turned to orange
and the room went spinning round

at the age of 37
she realized she'd never ride
through Paris in a sports car
with the warm wind in her hair
so she let the phone keep ringing
as she sat there softly singing
little nursery rhymes she'd memorized
in her Daddy's easy chair

her husband he's off to work
and the kids are off to school
and there were oh so many ways
for her to spend the day

she could clean the house for hours
or rearrange the flowers
or run naked through the shady street
screaming all the way

at the age of 37
she realized she'd never ride
through Paris in a sports car
with the warm wind in her hair
so she let the phone keep ringing
as she sat there softly singing
pretty nursery rhymes she'd memorized
in her Daddy's easy chair

the evening sun touched gently on
the eyes of Lucy Jordan
on the rooftop where she climbed
when all the laughter grew too loud

and she bowed and curtsied to the man
who reached and offered her his hand
and he led her down to the long white car
that waited past the crowd

at the age of 37
she knew she'd found forever
as she rode along through Paris
with the warm wind in her hair

*
summary of this song by the late Sharon Hutchinson:
It is about a 30ish year old woman who realizes that she has reached that point in her life where her dreams will never come true. She has a very boring life that is driving her crazy. The main theme is that she finally becomes detached from reality. She goes out on the roof, where many people see her, and the psychiatric attendants come to take her to a mental institution. In other words, complete nervous breakdown and the death of her cherished dream. It is as the Rolling Stones sang: "Lose your dreams and you will lose your mind."

Edit 2b for headphones, May 2022/May 2024. D u b b e d  video. Source file of the edit is the song on the 1965 abum "The Rolling Stones, Now!" (Japanese mini lp, 2006 remastered - uicy-93015).
"You Can't Catch Me" is written and originally performed by Chuck Berry, released as a single in 1956. The song's lyrics mention racing a souped-up "air-mobile" down the New Jersey Turnpike (a toll road in New Jersey). It was featured in the 1956 Berry film "Rock Rock, Rock".
The Stones recorded the song June 24-26, 1964. Released on the 2nd U.K. studio album: "The Rolling Stones no. 2" Decca Records, date: January 15, 1965. Released in the US on February 13, 1965 on the album "The Rolling Stones, Now!"

YOU CAN'T CATCH ME
(Chuck Berry)

I bought a brand new airmobile
it was custom made
it was a Flight DeVille
with a poweful motor
and some hideaway wings
push in on the button and you can hear her sing

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours
I was rolling slowly 'cause of drizzlin' showers
up come a flattop he was movin' up with me
then come sailin' goodbye
in a little old suped up mini
I put my foot in my tank and I begin to roll
moanin' sirens was the state patrol
so I get out my wings and then I blew my horn
bye-bye New Jersey I become airborne

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

flyin' with my baby last Saturday night
wasn't no gray cloud floatin' in sight
big full moon shinin' up above
cuddle up honey be my love
sweetest little thing that I ever seen
I'm gonna name you Mabelline
flyin' with all the things set on flight control
radio tuned to rock 'n' roll
two three hours passin' by
altitude dropped to 505
fuel consumption way too fast
let's get on home before we run out of gas

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

MY GIRL (the only true lyrics on the web)
(Smokey Robinson and Ronald White)

I got sunshine on a cloudy day
when it's cold outside I've got the month of May

I guess you'll say
what can make me feel this way
my girl (my girl)(my girl)
talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

I've got so much honey the bees envy me
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees

well I guess you'll say
what can make me feel this way
my girl (my girl)(my girl)
talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

oooh
hey hey hey
hey hey hey
(oooh)

I don't need no money or to pop it in
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim

well I guess you'll say
what can make me feel this way
my girl (my girl)(my girl)
talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)
(talkin' 'bout my girl)

I got sunshine on a cloudy day with my girl
I even got the month of May with my girl
(talking 'bout my girl)(my girl) talkin' 'bout talkin' 'bout

Edit 4a for headphones, May 2024.
First recorded in July of 1964 with Jimmy Page, that version was not released until 1975 on the album "Metamorphosis". Re-recorded November 2, 1964 and released two weeks later in the US as a single, and then released in the US on the album "The Rolling Stones, Now!" in February of 1965. Released in September of 1965 in the UK on the album "Out Of Our Heads". Source file of this edit: the 1966 album "Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass)" UK release (1989 Japanese release on London Records label- P25L 25039).

Lead and rhythm guitar: Brian Jones (bass sounding six string). Keith Richards (rhythm guitar & solo). Lead vocals: Mick Jagger. Bass: Bill Wyman. Drums: Charlie Watts. Background vocals: Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. Tambourine & piano: Jack Nitzsche.

The EP reached #6 in Holland, the single was their second hit in the US, it reached #19.

This song was released in the US as a single in 1964 when many radio stations refused to play "Little Red Rooster," which contained lyrics that were too "suggestive" for many listeners. "Little Red Rooster" was #1 in England, but did not chart in the US.

The Stones recorded this at RCA studios in Hollywood*, Los Angeles. It became just the second American hit - after "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)" - for the group that was written by their band members. Per their custom the song is credited to Mick Jagger/Keith Richards.

Jack Nitzsche played piano and tambourine on this track. Nitzsche was an important behind-the-scenes player, producer and arranger for The Rolling Stones and many other rock artists. He worked with Phil Spector as an arranger, helping create the famous Wall Of Sound on '60s recordings by The Ronettes, The Crystals and The Righteous Brothers.

The b-side was "What A Shame", mono at first, later on it was released in stereo on several albums.

HEART OF STONE
(Jagger/Richards)

there've been so many
girls that I've known
I made so many cry
and still I wonder why

here comes a little girl
I see you walking down the street
she's all by herself
I try and knock her off her feet

but she'll never break never break never break never break
this heart of stone
oh no no this heart of stone

what's different about her
I don't really know
no matter how I try
I just can't make her cry

'cause she'll never break never break never break never break
this heart of stone
oh no no no this heart of stone

don't keep on looking
that some old way
if you try acting sad
you will only make me glad

better listen little girl
you go on walking down the street
I ain't got no love
I ain't the kind to meet

'cause you'll never break never break never break never break
this heart of stone
oh no no you'll never break this heart of stone darling
no no this heart of stone
you'll never break it darling
you won't break this heart of stone
oh no no no
you better go
you better go home
'cause you'll you'll never break this heart of stone

And here is your bonus for reading (that distinguishes us from the animals)(so you're not an animal):

From the book "The Rolling Stones All the Songs" by Philippe Margotin:
The Rolling Stones recorded “Heart of Stone” at the RCA Studios in Hollywood during their second United States tour of 1964. Dave Hassinger recalls: “I really don’t know the Stones, or any of them that well. I didn’t socialize with them, but we were friends in the studio… The first record I did was ‘Heart Of Stone’…”40 Contrary to their habit of entering the studio and working up numbers on the spot, some time had already been spent on “Heart of Stone” prior to the November 2 session. A demo exists (included on the 1975 album Metamorphosis) that had been recorded on July 21 at Regent Sound Studios in London with Bill Farley at the controls, Mick Jagger as the only representative of the Stones, a certain Jimmy Page on guitar, and Clem Cattini on drums. The words are the same (both verses and refrain). The arrangement, however, has changed. Whereas the number was originally a country-folk ballad with pedal steel guitar and vocal harmonies, at the RCA Studios “Heart of Stone” was transformed into a soul ballad in the spirit of those recorded by Otis Redding or Bobby Blue Bland.
Unusually, the intro is strummed by Keith Richards on his Gibson Les Paul. He is immediately joined by Brian Jones, who comes in with the main riff, identical to that created by Jimmy Page on the Regent Sound demo. Two other guitar parts are overdubbed: a second rhythm part with plenty of vibrato (no doubt Brian on his Vox “Teardrop”).

Edit for headphones, May 2024. Part of a song from the 10 lp bootleg "Mystery Box", lp #6 ("A Token Of His Extreme"), side A. Discogs says: "Stinkfoot" is the "Tom Waits version".
Great guitar solo. A bit pumped up by me.

Edit 2b for headphones, May 2022/May 2024. D u b b e d  video. Source file of the edit is the song on the 1965 abum "The Rolling Stones, Now!" (Japanese mini lp, 2006 remastered - uicy-93015).
"You Can't Catch Me" is written and originally performed by Chuck Berry, released as a single in 1956. The song's lyrics mention racing a souped-up "air-mobile" down the New Jersey Turnpike (a toll road in New Jersey). It was featured in the 1956 Berry film "Rock Rock, Rock".
The Stones recorded the song June 24-26, 1964. Released on the 2nd U.K. studio album: "The Rolling Stones no. 2" Decca Records, date: January 15, 1965. Released in the US on February 13, 1965 on the album "The Rolling Stones, Now!"

YOU CAN'T CATCH ME
(Chuck Berry)

I bought a brand new airmobile
it was custom made
it was a Flight DeVille
with a poweful motor
and some hideaway wings
push in on the button and you can hear her sing

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours
I was rolling slowly 'cause of drizzlin' showers
up come a flattop he was movin' up with me
then come sailin' goodbye
in a little old suped up mini
I put my foot in my tank and I begin to roll
moanin' sirens was the state patrol
so I get out my wings and then I blew my horn
bye-bye New Jersey I become airborne

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

flyin' with my baby last Saturday night
wasn't no gray cloud floatin' in sight
big full moon shinin' up above
cuddle up honey be my love
sweetest little thing that I ever seen
I'm gonna name you Mabelline
flyin' with all the things set on flight control
radio tuned to rock 'n' roll
two three hours passin' by
altitude dropped to 505
fuel consumption way too fast
let's get on home before we run out of gas

now you can't catch me
no baby you can't catch me
'cause if you get too close
you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

RUBY TUESDAY
(Brian Jones & The Stones)

she would never say where she came from
yesterday don't matter if it's gone
while the sun is bright
or in the darkest night
no one knows
she comes and goes

goodbye Ruby Tuesday
who could hang a name on you
when you change with every new day
still I'm gonna miss you

don't question why she needs to be so free
she'll tell you it's the only way to be
she just can't be chained
to a life where nothing's gained
and nothing's lost
at such a cost

there's no time to lose I heard her say
cash your dreams before they slip away
dying all the time
lose your dreams
and you will lose your mind
ain't life unkind?

goodbye Ruby Tuesday
who could hang a name on you
when you change with every new day
still I'm gonna miss you

Edit 3 for headphones, May 2024.
Chris Farlowe with his version of a Rolling Stones song. The single was produced by Mick Jagger. It was a nr.1 hit in the UK Singles Chart in July 1966. It reached nr.11 in the Dutch Top 40. United States: nr.122 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under chart.
In 1975 this single's backing track was used to release a single with Mick Jagger on lead vocals, reaching no.45 in the UK. no.81 in the US.

Source of the edit is the song on the 1999 2 cd compilation album "Chris Farlowe - Out Of Time - The Immediate Anthology" (Immediate NEECD 310)(it contains 48 songs).

Review by Scott Janovitz:
In the 1960s Chris Farlowe had a string of modest hits, due primarily to the efforts and high profile of his frequent producer, Mick Jagger. Farlowe's biggest successes were songs penned by Jagger and Keith Richards, among other songwriting greats. In June of 1966 he recorded a version of it to serve as a guide for the upcoming Farlowe session. The track Jagger recorded (without the benefit of any of the other Rolling Stones) is a marvelous homage to the Wall of Sound production perfected by Phil Spector with groups like the Ronettes. The producer credited on "Out Of Time" is Andrew Loog Oldham, the Stones' manager and producer (up until around 1967). He and Jagger (with the aid of another Stones collaborator, musical director Art Greensdale) managed to turn what was essentially a demo track into something far more structurally and sonically impressive. "Out Of Time" contains all the elements used so effectively by Phil Spector and mirrored in previous Stones recordings like "We Were Falling In Love" -- including the prerequisite string section, a strong backbeat from session drummer Andy White, multiple percussion tracks, bells, and a chorus of backing singers bathed in echo. Even Greensdale's apt arrangement is seemingly inspired by the early-'60s Spector hits, starting with a string section riff that gives way to the verse but comes back later as an interlude before the song launches into its final chorus. The powerful arrangement and melody of "Out Of Time" really carry the lyric, which is directed at an unfaithful girl who wants to come back. When Jagger sings, "You're obsolete my baby, my poor unfaithful baby, you're out of time," the nasty air of superiority illustrates the difference between Jagger's style and the songs he's mimicking. This is why "Out Of Time" is such a notable moment in pop -- the majestic musical style pioneered by Spector in the early '60s is stripped of its idealistic romance and instead tied to a vitriolic narrative, indicative of the shift toward more realism in songwriting. Jagger was always the most pop-oriented of the Stones and this track is one among several -- including "We're Wastin' Time," "Blue Turns To Grey," and Spector's own "Da Doo Ron Ron" -- that he recorded in a similar style with several of the same session musicians. The Stones would later issue "Out Of Time" as a single of their own in 1975. It was covered by the Ramones (also devotees of Spector and the Ronettes), among others.

OUT OF TIME
(Jagger/Richards)

you don't know what's going on
you've been away for far too long
you can't come back and think you are still mine
you're out of touch my baby
my poor old fashioned baby
I said baby baby baby you're out of time

well baby baby baby you're out of time
I said baby baby baby you're out of time
yes you're all left out, yes you are
I said you're lefta out of there without a doubt
'cause baby baby baby you're out of time

you thought you was a clever girl
giving up your social whirl
you can't come back and be the first in line, oh yeah
you're obsolete my baby
my poor old faded baby
I said baby baby baby you're out of time

well baby baby baby you're out of time
I said baby baby baby you're out of time
yes you're all left out, yes you are
I said you're lefta out of there without a doubt
'cause baby baby baby you're out of time

oh yeah yeah oh aha yeah

baby, baby, baby, you're out of time
I said baby, baby, baby, you're out of time
yes you are, you're left out, yes you are
I said you're left out, out of there without love now
'cause baby, baby, baby, you're out of time

is everybody ready
baby baby baby you're out of time
you thought you was a clever girl

Edit 5b for headphones, April 2024. I colorized the black & white parts of the video (edit 5a). Did you ever notice that the first part of the song (1 minute and 18 seconds) is MONO? The rest (1 minute and 49 seconds) is stereo. Strange decision. Or was it done accidentally? Oh well, I tried to fix that in this edit. Source of the edit is the Japanese remastered album, catalog number uicy-93026.

The recording of the album "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (the title is a play on the "Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires" text that appeared inside a British passport) began just after the release of their album "Between The Buttons" (January 1967). Because of court appearances and jail terms the entire band was seldom present in the studio at one time, making recording of the album lengthy and disjointed. Band members frequently arrived with guests in tow, further interfering with productivity. One of the more level-headed members of the band during this time, Bill Wyman, wary of psychedelic drugs, wrote the song "In Another Land" to parody the Stones' current goings-on. In his 2002 book "Rolling With The Stones", Bill Wyman describes the situations in the studio:

"Every day at the studio it was a lottery as to who would turn up and what – if any – positive contribution they would make when they did. Keith would arrive with anywhere up to ten people, Brian with another half-a-dozen and it was the same for Mick. They were assorted girlfriends and friends. I hated it! Then again, so did producer Andrew Oldham and he just gave up on it. There were times when I wish I could have done, too.

That's why I think the mono part was because of the ongoing mess in the recording studio.

Recorded August 20-30 and September 1-7, 1967.

(Jones/Jagger/Richards/Watts/Wyman/Stewart/Hopkins)

well my name is a number
a piece of plastic film
and I grow tiny flowers
in my little window sill

dont you know I'm the 2000 man
and my kids they just don't understand me at all

well my wife still respects me
I really misuse her
I am having an affair
with a random computer

don't you know I'm the 2000 man
and my kids they just don't understand me at all

oh daddy proud of your planet
oh mummy proud of your sun
oh daddy proud of your planet
oh mummy proud of your sun
oh daddy your brain's still flashing
like it did when you were young
or did you come down crashing
seeing all the things you'd done
all was a big put on

oh daddy proud of your planet
oh mummy proud of your son
oh daddy proud of your planet
oh mummy proud of your son

oh daddy proud of your planet
oh mummy proud of your sun

GET OFF OF MY CLOUD
(Jagger/Richards)

I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block
and I'm sitting home looking out the window imagining the world has stopped
then in flies a guy who's all dressed up just like a Union Jack
and says, I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack

I said hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud baby

the telephone is ringing I say hi it's me Who is it there on the line
a voice says, hi hello how are you well I guess I'm doin' fine
he says it's three a.m. there's too much noise don't you people ever wanna go to bed
because you feel so good do you have to drive me out of my head

I said hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud, baby

I was sick and tired fed up with this and decided to take a drive downtown
it was so very quiet and peaceful there was nobody not a soul around
I laid myself out I was so tired and I started to dream
in the morning the parking tickets were just like flags that stuck on my wind screen

I said hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
don't hang around 'cause two's a crowd on my cloud

hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
hey you get off of my cloud
don't hang around baby two's a crowd on my cloud
hey you

PART OF THE WIND
(Tim Hardin)

falling through my heart in loving you
flying wingless wondering what to do
asking a future for you

fortune falling with my heart
luck be trusted in time
trusting the breeze to be mine
hoping you'll be part of the wind

running back to you I'm waiting for the sun
waiting, hoping you're the one
I won't chase you if you run

hoping you'll be part of the wind

falling through my heart in loving you
flying wingless wondering what to do
asking a future for you

CAROL
(Chuck Berry)

oh Carol
don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance
if it takes me all night and day

climb into my machine so we can groove on out
I know some swinging little joint where we can jump and shout
it's not too far back on the highway not so long a ride
you park the car out in the open you can walk inside
a little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her ma'am
'cause every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed

oh Carol
don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance
if it takes me all night and day

how if you want to hear some music like the boys are playing
hold tight, bang your foot don't let it carry you away
don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud
won't the music intrigue you when they get a crowd
well you can't dance I know you would you could
I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you dance so good

oh Carol
don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance
if it takes me all night and day

oh Carol
don't let him steal your heart away
I've got to learn to dance
if it takes me all night and day

Edit for headphones, March 2024. Edit of a song of the 1967 album "Love In A Mist (2002 Japanese remaster uicy 3299). Warning: on this album and on the 4cd box set "The Decca Years 1965-1967" (2007 Japanese remaster uicy-90408-11) the song "Counting" is in a bad quality off-centered mono. However, it is true stereo on the "2-on-1" package "North Country Maid/Love In A Mist" (BGO Records BGOCD1227).

WITH YOU IN MIND
(Jackie De Shannon)

I'll take a walk all by myself
so I can think of nothing else
but loving you when we find time
these are the things
I'll do with you in mind

I'll pick a rose and feel the thorn
every day that you are gone
a new memory to relive I'll find
these are the things
I'll do with you in mind

there'll come a day when I can live
to go and bring you back to me
we'll dance and sing and toast someone
these are the things
I'll do with you in mind

these are the things
I'll do with you in mind

Edit 2c for headphones, April 2013/March 2024. Dubbed video. Video of a different song. Otis Redding and his beautiful version of "That's how strong my love is". (Sorry for not being able to get my hands on Otis performing this song and for using a different song's video.)

"That's How Strong My Love Is" was a hit debut song by deep soul singer O.V. Wright in 1964. The single was a hit on the American R&B chart. The song was written by Wright's manager and publicist Roosevelt Jamison, who came from a gospel music background.

The song is a soulful love ballad and has been covered many times since, most notably by Otis Redding in 1965 and appears on his album The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads. Three other version of the song were recorded in 1965, one by The Rolling Stones on their album "Out Of Our Heads", a second by "The In Crowd", released as a single and a third by "The Hollies" on their album "The Hollies".

THAT'S HOW STRONG MY LOVE IS
(Roosevelt Jamison)

if I was the sun way up there
I'd go with love most everywhere
I'll be the moon when the sun goes down
just to let you know that I'm still around

that's how strong my love is, oh
that's how strong my love is
that's how strong my love is, baby, baby
that's how strong my love is

I'll be the weeping willow drowning in my tears
you can go swimming when you're here
I'll be the rainbow when the sun is gone
wrap you in my colors and keep you warm

that's how strong my love is, darling
that's how strong my love is, baby
that's how strong my love is, oooh
that's how strong my love is

I'll be the ocean so deep and wide
I'll get out the tears whenever you cry
I'll be the breeze after the storm is gone
to dry your eyes and love you warm

that's how strong my love is, baby
that's how strong my love is
that's how strong my love is, darling
that's how strong my love is

that's how strong my love is, so deep in
well, that's how strong my love is
so much love, yes so much love, oohh
yes so much love, yes so much love
anything that I can do, I'll be good for you
any kind of love you want, I'll be with you

19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
(Jagger/Richards)

you're the kind of person
you meet at certain dismal dull affairs
center of a crowd, talking much too loud
running up and down the stairs
well, it seems to me that you have seen too much in too few years
and though you've tried you just can't hide
your eyes are edged with tears

you better stop
look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown

when you were a child
you were treated kind
but you were never brought up right
you were always spoiled with a thousand toys
but still you cried all night
your mother who neglected you
owes a million dollars tax
and your father's still perfecting ways of making sealing wax

you better stop, look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown

oh, who's to blame, that girl's just insane
well nothing I do don't seem to work
it only seems to make matters worse, oh please

you were still in school
when you had that fool
who really messed your mind
and after that you turned your back
on treating people kind
on our first trip
I tried so hard to rearrange your mind
but after while I realized you were disarranging mine

you better stop, look around
here it comes, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown
here comes your nine-teenth nervous breakdown

This channel is about my edits for headphones.
Guarantee: I add no sounds, all you hear is the artists' music. I don't "DES" (digitally extract stereo) either. For I think that is fake, artificial and NOT the true sound of the artists.

With « processed 'stereo' » I mean: fake stereo, just to enjoy the music a bit 'better', a bit 'stereo-ish'.
Nowadays I use the description "wide mono", for processed stereo is not the right description.

My edits are here for free, I don't earn money with this (it only COSTS me money), so please don't be offended if I play around with sound, it is just my hobby, I have no intention to be a wise guy or smart ass, it's just what I like to do...
